We’ve long adored the gorgeous handcrafted besoms of Maya Rose, a.k.a. Reflower Ritual, and been enamored by the gleaming gem-studded wands and scepters of Rachel Pitler, a.k.a. Sorceress and the Stone. So when we saw that the two had joined forces for an extremely extra green-themed five-piece collaboration called The Bog Witch’s Relic Broom Collection … well, obviously our interest was piqued. What could be better than a wand-broom-scepter extravaganza? Obviously, it was the (sister-witch) partnership of our dreams.
Maya says she’d been admiring Rachel’s work for a while when she commented that a particular staff of Rachel’s would make an extremely cool broom handle. (Um, yes!) From there, they started swapping ideas. Rachel had the idea to do a green theme, which Maya loved. The two live across the country—Rachel in California and Maya in Massachusetts—so the process was this: Maya made the brooms, then shipped them to Rachel, who added her own work. The result was a collection of five intricately and individually designed besoms with names like Maerwynn the Mossblood Witch, which features a bristle adorned with leatherleaf ferns and moss, encaged by braided broomcorn, and a handle decorated with citrine, garnet, peridot, and moss agate; and Lady Rosethorn of the Peat, which features a bouquet of dried flowers tied around the bristle with lace ribbon and a handle studded with natural citrine, peridot, and rhinestones. One connects you to the earth and offers fierce protection; the other carries joy, prosperity, and a gentle strength. And that’s just two of them!
The response was incredible, both women say, and as you can imagine, fans from both their communities have been asking for more. So the two are now working on a new collection, The Coven, which will feature 13 very detailed and heavily adorned ritual brooms, each based on a different type of witchcraft (green witch, death witch, love witch, etc.). This time Maya sent Rachel the handles (minus broom part) first. Rachel is adding the metal detail and sending them back to Maya to complete. When we spoke to them, Rachel was hard at work. “This second collection is pushing my creativity into places I’ve never explored before,” she says. “Collaborating with Maya somehow pulls me outside of my usual creative space and encourages me to experiment in ways I probably wouldn’t on my own. That’s incredibly special, and I’m so grateful for this creative friendship.”
